Sebastian Junger hit it big with his 1997 book "The Perfect Storm," which chronicled the fate of the crew swordfishing Andrea Gail, lost at sea during the nor'easter in 1991.
Now the author has collaborated with photojournalist Tim Hetherington documentary "Restrepo," which discusses the deployment of American soldiers in a remote post in one of Afghanistan's most dangerous valleys.
"I've been coming there since 1996. Tim and I did a total of 10 trips a month between us," said Belmont native in one-one Herald interview.
Junger was in the country when the Alliance overthrow the Taliban and liberated Kabul. He saw "that the Bush administration has made a big mistake what easy win is by not putting enough troops and enough resources in Afghanistan. I realized that the U.S. Army will be involved there for years and wondered what it would be Americans in battle. "
So in June 2007 Junger decided "to follow one of the platoon as much as I could for a single deployment."
With a focus on persistent "Restrepo," which won the Grand Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival, taking crude see people under fire.
"This film is about soldiers and reflect their reality and their internal dialogue. We want to be as faithful as possible to it," said Junger, who also co-directed.
